On the 1881, the family are living at 71 Cardigan Street, Oxford, and Samuel is working as a Messenger. 1891 finds Samuel and his family residing at St Aldate's Street, and he is working as a Caretaker. By 1901 they have moved to 17 Cobden Crescent in Oxford. Another move and on the 1911 census the address is Osney Lane, Oxford.
