Richard Jones 1811 - ?
Richard Jones 1841 Hollins Lane
Born in North Shropshire in about 1811, it is not really known where Richard was born. Depending on which census you read, his birthplace could be Wem, Whitchurch or Tilstock It is believed that his father was William Jones and that he was a Shoemaker.
Richard was married to Sarah Madeley and by 1830 they had had their first child, a son named Richard. Samuel was born in 1834 and Henry was their third son born in 1836. The only marriage entry found for Richard and Sarah is under the Whitchurch marriage entries. On the 22nd April 1833, Richard Jones married Sarah Madeley, in the parish of Whitchurch. Niether can read or write, both signing with a X. If this is right, then their son Richard was either born before they married, is not Richard's son or is date of birth has been recorded wrong somewhere in all the documents found. (Sarah had a child out of wedlock - a son named William Madeley. He was born in 1826, and although he takes the Jones surname, he eventually reverts back to his birth surname of Madeley)
In 1841 Richard and Sarah are living in Hollins Lane, Tilstock, a small village near Whitchurch in North Shropshire. Richard is recorded as a Shoemaker, and the whole family are entered into the census at this address. 1851 found the family still at Hollins Lane, Tilstock, though now the only son still at home is Henry, and he is working as a Shoemaker with his father. (also listed is John Growcott, aged 5 and under 'relation to head of household' he is recorded as a Nephew. It is not known as yet who this little boy is)
By 1861 the family have moved to Market Drayton. They were living at Shropshire Street (South side). Richard was a Boot & Shoemaker, aged 52 and still with the family is John Growcott, but now entered on the census a Lodger, and apprentice. In the 1863 directory issued by the Post Office, Richard Jones is shown as a Shoemaker in Shropshire Street. He was also listed in Slater's Directory of 1868 - Richard Jones, Shropshire Street, Shoemaker
Sometime between 1861 and 1870, Richard's wife Sarah passes away. (she was on the 1861 census but no trace of her in 1871). Richard remarried in 1870, on the 14th of April, his second wife was Phoebe (nee Boddy), and she was originally from Herefordshire. They were married in the Methodist Church in Market Drayton. On their marriage certificate Richard signed with a X while Phoebe signed her name. It is on this marriage certificate that Richard's father is named - William Jones, Shoemaker. It suggests that he was still alive as 'deceased' is not written after his name. Phoebe's father was also still alive, he was Samuel Boddy, Carpenter.
The 1871 census for Market Drayton found Richard and his new wife in Shropshire Street, Richard is now aged 60 and still working as a Shoemaker. The 1877 Mercer & Crockers Directory, there was an entry for Richard Jones, Bootmaker in the Little Drayton area of Market Drayton - this could be Richard's son rather than Richard, as Shropshire Street is not in Little Drayton However in the 1879 Kelly Directory, Richard Jones of Shropshire Street had an entry as a Shoemaker. The same directory, Kellys, listed Richard in 1885 and in the 1891 edition - Bootmaker, Shropshire Street.
The 1881 census for Market Drayton, found Richard and Phoebe in Shropshire Street. Living with them is Richard's niece Agnes Jones.
Phoebe died in 1885, on the 28th November, and she was buried in Market Drayton. Her funeral took place on the 2nd December. Phoebe left a will, which was read on the 8th March 1886, and the administration and rest of the will was read on the 11th May 1886. Phoebe left under £450, and her will mentions her nephew William Boddy and nieces Elizabeth Boddy & Eliza Powis, They were all left some money, including Richard's grandaughter Lily Jane Jones when she turned 21.
Sarah Madeley
Sarah was Richard's first wife. She was born in about 1806 in Whitchurch, North Shropshire, she married Richard Jones and they had three sons - Richard, Samuel and Henry. Sarah also had a son born out of wedlock, William Madeley was born in Whitchurch in 1826. His father is unknown.
At the moment I do not know when Sarah died, as no trace of her death can be found. I believe it was between 1861 when she last appears on the census and 1870, when Richard remarried. (he states on the marriage certificate that he is a widow).
Did Sarah have a sister called Martha - this question has come about as later in the history there is another shoemaker called Samuel Jones, who married Martha Madeley. Were they sisters or cousins?
