Samuel Craddock
No 5 Cheshire Street, Market Drayton
Samuel Craddock was born in 1785 in Market Drayton, and was baptised on the 31st July 1785. His father was Isaac Craddock (1740 - 1836) and his mother was Sarah (nee Platt) (1745 - 1831)
Samuel lived in Market Drayton all his life and grew up to follow in his father's trade. Isaac was a Cordwainer (Shoemaker) and Samuel and his brother Thomas were shoemakers/bootmakers.
On the 14th February 1810 Samuel married Phoebe Mumford. They were married in Moreton Say, Shropshire. Their first child, a daughter named Sarah was born in 1811 and was baptised on the 17th February that year. In 1815 they had a second daughter named Elizabeth and she was baptised on the 8th December 1815. Caroline was their third daughter and she was baptised in 1818 on the 24th April. She was followed by a fourth daughter Lydia who baptised in 1821.
In the 1828 trade directory - Pigots Directory - there is an entry for Samuel Craddock, he was listed as living and working in Shropshire Street in Market Drayton, and was listed under the heading Boot & Shoemakers.
In the same year Samuel and Phoebe had another child. Another daughter, Jane who was baptised on the 3rd April 1828. A sixth daughter was born and she was called Harriet. However her baptism has yet to be found to establish the year she was born, though it was 1827/1828 as on the 1841 census she is listed as aged 13.
After six daughters, Samuel and Phoebe have a son, Samuel, who was baptised on the 10th January 1834. In 1835 Pigots Directory again lists Samuel, under the heading Boot & Shoemaker and he is living/working in Shropshire Street. 1838 sees the birth of their second son, George.
By 1840 the family have moved, as the Robinsons Directory of Shropshire in the same year lists Samuel Craddock, Shoemaker in Cheshire Street. The census in the following year, 1841, finds the family in Cheshire Street, Samuel and Phoebe and four of their children: Samuel, George, Harriet & Jane. Samuel is aged 50, occupation - shoemaker.
In the 1844 edition of Pigots Directory of Shropshire, Samuel is recorded at No 5 Cheshire Street, under the heading Shoemaker. On the 1851 census Samuel is missing from the family home. At No 5 Cheshire Street is Phoebe, his wife, and their daughter Lydia, together with Lydia's husband Philip Fernihough. Phoebe is recorded as
Cordwainer's wife and head of the household. The child living in the household is Lydia's son (Phoebe's grandson) - Isaac who is 9 years old.

Phoebe Craddock died in April 1851, her death certificate records her death in Cheshire Street on the 13th April 1851. On the death certificate, present at the death is Samuel Craddock.
At some point in time, after the death of his wife, Samuel leaves Market Drayton, and moves to Manchester. He follows three of his daughters, who had also left Market Drayton and moved to Manchester. Samuel died on the 22nd September 1853 at 61 Loom Street, Manchester. On the 1851 census two years earlier, the residents of this address were Jane and William Mather - Jane was Samuel's fifth daughter, William is her husband - and also living here is Thomas Craddock - Samuel's brother. Thomas was present at the death of Samuel.
